(More customer reviews)I have purchased a manual model about a year ago as a backup for my bigger Coffee-Tech 2.5lb Torrefattore roaster. I also use it as a sample roaster. This is a great little device that is capable of roasting enough coffee for a week in one or two batches. Since I have owned previously hot air roasters (Hearthware Precision and I-Roast 2) I can comment that I definitely prefer roasts from FZ-RR 700, which are rounder, sweeter, more aromatic and have fuller flavor spectrum. I also like the full control over heating and mixing that this device offers, allowing to explore the influence of faster or slower heating on flavor profile.
While this device shines in roasting, the convenience (or better lack of convenience) features may not fit everyone. While you don't need a vent and there is almost no chaff escaping the drum, you will still need to take care of cooling and chaff separation (I use two colanders for this). Bean inspection during roasting is also not very convenient. Those are the reasons I rated it four and not five stars.
On the other hand, it's simplicity and durability is definitely a big plus as opposed to most other home roasting appliances made with use of plastic and containing electronic components that tend to fail at some point.
