After many happy (and dare I say, naive) years with our DeLonghi Caffe Espresso, it was time to replace our old workhorse.Having just spent the summer in Spain, where no bar is complete without the standard superautomatic Gaggia espresso maker, I decided that truly great espresso was a daily necessity.I was tired of incompetent teenagers / college students who work at local coffee shops mangling something as simple as a cappuccino (one part espresso, one part milk, one part foam) into a milk-drowned latte with no foam.

I wanted something in the range of $200, with a dependable track record and plenty of power to spare.I waded through a myriad of reviews for the Gaggia Carezza, hailed as a champion of its class, but read a number of negative reviews concerning design shortcomings.

Enter the Gaggia Evolution.Although the Gaggia Carezza and Evolution share the same innards, the Evolution boasts several improvements in design. With its 17.5 bar pump and high wattage, dual element boiler, the Gaggia Evolution is ready to brew in around 5-10 minutes (I always prime the boiler first).

Design improvements over the Carezza include: a larger drip tray, a cup warmer (although, as usual, it's more effective to preheat your cups by filling them with hot water, which can be done during priming), anti-vibration mounts (once primed, the Gaggia Evolution is nearly whisper-quiet), and a brass commercial portafilter (the spouts on the Carezza were changed to plastic). My Evolution came with the Perfect Crema device (which is supposed to go under the single filter basket in order to create additional pressure/allow a coarser grind), but having read numerous negative reviews of the ineffective device, I simply left it in the box with the packing material.

Five stars for the instruction manuals and CD-ROM: the Gaggia Evolution comes with not one, but two instruction manuals: one from the manufacturer (Gaggia), and one from the North American importer (Importika). The Importika manual is intuitive, easy to read and injected with coffee humor, although the Evolution is not among the Gaggia models listed in the Appendix. The included CD-ROM walks you through setup in the form of short movies and narration, along with more advanced tips and techniques for coffee connoisseurs. We put our laptop on the kitchen table and followed along after unpacking our new Gaggia (thankfully, nothing was broken in the mail, as happened to several Gaggia Carezza owners).Although the manual hinted that your first coffee might not be potable, we'd followed various tips online (prime your new machine several times to remove any residue and plastic-y taste), and our first espresso was laden with crema. The Turbo Frother attachment made the creamiest, densest microfoam I have ever seen-it looked more like meringue (hint: use skim milk for best results). My only complaint would be the cheapness of the included coffee scoop, and you definitely want to invest in a better tamp for maximum extraction (the Gaggia takes a 58 mm tamp at a recommended 30 pounds of pressure).

If you're not in the market to buy a $200-300 grinder (Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder) to go with your new Gaggia, Illy makes a delicious, dependable espresso grind, available in tins (decaf, too) or Pods. The Evolution is Pod-ready, simply use the single shot basket with the portafilter. Tip: "classic" double shots should take around 20-25 seconds to extract.

The Evolution is a steal for the current price, since it contains the same innards as other Gaggias in the $400-500 range.Although it runs around $50-100 more than the Carezza, I appreciated the design improvements, stylish lines (I have a Tuscan kitchen with hand-painted ceramics and terra cotta tiles and was afraid that the "modern" styling would stand out, but the Evolution is much more traditional-looking and unobtrusive than the Carezza), and performance.(Note: the Evolution is also available in an all-silver model, but it will set you back another $50.The black model features a black base and sides and a silver front and silver drip tray.)

Excellent for the espresso novice or connoisseur, easy to use and clean, and it makes better espresso than some $500-1,000 machines I've tried!

I have the machine for just one week now & I guess for the price ( I paid $204 total) , you probably can't find a better one.
Looks great, makes good espresso with ok crema. I get about an 1/8" crema everytime. I'm not sure if thats ok or to little.
My two major complaints are
1) after you pulled your shot & shut the brewing switch off, about another 2 to 3 oz's of liquid still comes out of the portafilter. All of it goes into the drip trayafter you remove your cup from underneath.
I thought it might have been just my machine, but I read a review somewhere else & they had the same problem.

2) The portafilter does not fit very snug into the holder, so when you knock out the grinds into the garbage, sometimes the you have to retrieve the filter. So just hold down the edge of the filter with your thumb when it cools and that should take care of this problem. Just do it with a cool rag if it's still hot.

One more thing) If your steaming milk, in order to get the milks temp up to 160 degrees, you may have to steam it till the temp light comes back on, then wait about 30 seconds till it goes off again and then steam it for a few more seconds.

So if you can live with the minor issues above and can't spend more than $200, this machine will make very good espresso's & capucino's

I am surprised that I am the first reviewer of this great machine.I just received mine yesterday.I bought it from another vender, but since I typically do most of my shopping via Amazon I thought I would share my experience thus far.Overall, this Super-Automatic is simple to use and makes great coffee, lattes, and cappuccino's.My advice though....WATCH THE DVD BEFORE USING!!!I thought I had this thing in the bag.. how difficult could it be to use??....Well it isn't difficult to use, but there are a few things I did that had I watched the video all the way through I would not have done. For example, when setting how fine or coarse you want the beans you have to adjust the dial one notch at a time while the grinder is running (still doesn't make sense to me).I paused the video before waiting for the lady to finish talking on the topic and just moved it a few notches towards fine...oops!Oh well, doesn't seem to have adversely effected anything, but now I know.Contrary to reviews I have read of super-auto's, the burr grinder on this one is quiet when running. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 is extremely loud and 1 is basically silent I would rate this machine a 5 and my Cuisinart Grind and brew (the one that hold like a pound of beans) an 8.I was actually expecting something much louder.

Build Quality-I would have to say I am impressed with the looks of this machine and its fit and finish.I am sure some people will complain of the amount of plastic, but seeing how this thing already weighs over 20lbs.why add more weight.I thought about the Gran Dama, but honestly this machine is better.

Coffee- I was also considering the Jura Z5 because I read good things, but the price was a stretch.Granted, this machine isn't cheap either.I believe that I made the right choice. The espresso is great.I do wonder though what it tasted like from the factory, but since I changed the settings prematurely I will never know...ha!The Milk pitcher is ingenious...BRAVO!Latte's and Cappuccino's are a breeze and let me tell you this machine makes both very well.Sure a semi-auto can do better, but really I do not want to do the extra steps. As it is, Starbucks does not compare.I have read reviews that state the Gran Dama latte's can be cold.I have to admit, the first one I made was, but after I made a couple and utilized the cup warmer they were perfect.I bought the Cinnamon Dolce syrup from Starbucks and I downed to many lattes....probably explains why at 0209 EST I am still up and writing this review.

My Opinion-If you are in the market for a super-automatic I would say give this one a consideration.I bought this machine from a place that has probably the best return policy of all retailers, so if something does go wrong I will take it right back for another.Regardless, the people at Delonghi are great and I was amazed that as soon as I pushed (1) I was talking to a person almost immediately.I will probably just purchase the extended warranty from the manufacturer and extend the 2 years to 4...Extra $150.That is all for now.Look for an update in a couple months.**UPDATE** 3/24/10

Well I overworked the first one, but the place I bought it from gladly took it back and ordered me another one.I made nearly 2,000 cups of coffee in 4 months with the first one.I have made nearly 1000 with the one I have now, but it seems to be holding up fine.As far as recommending it I still would.I love this machine. It is so nice that I can make everything Starbucks does without having to pay them $4 for every cup.I have basically every syrup they have and all my guests rave about the Delonghi. It is a lot of money to spend on a coffee maker, but I would do it again.

Saeco Royal Professional SuperAutomatic Espresso Coffee and Cappuccino Machine Review

Saeco Royal Professional SuperAutomatic Espresso Coffee and Cappuccino Machine
Average Reviews:

I was anxious to get my new Royal Professional from the box.It looks great, warms up fast. The Cappuccinotore, a plastic device which is supposed to draw milk from a container, steam it and deliver frothy creme to your cup did not work, instead it blew steam into the milk container, diluting it. OK, make the cappuccino manually. Push a button for size of cup, and presto, American style coffee comes out. Around the side, one can set the amount of coffee larger or smaller. Was not strong enough, so more coffee.Another cup. Drinkable as espresso, tasteless as cappuccino. One can also grind the coffee finer, while the grinder is running, made that adjustment to the finest grind, and largest measure of coffee. The machine will just not make a real cappuccino that you can buy on any street in Italy or Spain. Too weak, even at the highest settings.
The manual steamer is a disappointment as well, even with practice small bubble creme cannot be done, and it is quite slow as well. This is a good machine to make American styled coffee, or weak espresso, but it will impress your friends and office clients with its appearance. You need a Krups to make the real thing, when you know the difference.

Jura-Capresso 13204 Impressa E9 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this coffee maker for almost one month now and I absolutely love it.My parents have owned the same machine for years and it's still going strong. The only difference that I could decipher between the E8 and the E9 is that the E9 is painted silver instead of black.Amazon was selling them for the same price, and silver fit better with the rest of my kitchen accessories, so I opted for this model.

The question of whether or not to buy such an expensive machine came down to a number of factors for me: 1) quality of coffee, 2) ease of use, 3) durability & build quality.

As far as quality of coffee goes, I find what this machine produces to be wonderful.I use dark roast Starbucks beans and I've had no issues.I read that the Starbucks beans can be a little too oily and cause jams; I've had no such issues, at least so far.The manual recommends "airing out" the beans for a few hours before putting them in the machine, so I do this.

Ease of use is wonderful. It even comes with a DVD just in case you find reading too laborious.I opted for the DVD and it taught me everything I needed to know to get this thing up and running, and properly maintained.

Build quality & durability remain to be seen, though I know 3 people who have owned these machines without major issues. The most regular complaint of the Jura-Capresso line, at least in my experience reading reviews, is that the service people are very unfriendly.I wonder if this is a function of the ego of the average purchaser of a $1,000 coffee maker, or if the support people truly are a cantankerous bunch.I'll probably find out one way or the other, but snippiness on the phone isn't enough to deter me, if in fact that is the case.I love this machine too much.RECOMMENDED!

After 7 years or so of using a bulletproof Starbucks Barista which produced great espresso and copious microfoam, I bought this machine for my wife for Christmas (although she swears it was yet another gift to myself). The build quality and ease of use is great. The espresso is very good (but not up to the standards of a well pulled shot off a semi-auto).Nevertheless, the lack of any mess and pushbutton convenience outweighs any complaints about the quality of the shot - don't get me wrong, it pulls a very nice shot. What it doesnt do well is create the beautiful microfoam an experienced user can get using a traditional steam wand. All of these super-autos have that annoying steam-assist wand which is supposed to require no skillto create foam.Unfortunately all it does it create these large crappy bubbles and very little foam.To make matters worse, the side steam holes get clogged very easily and then the result is NO FOAM. I called wholelattelove and Capresso looking for a solution and they each had no clue either (a) how to solve the problem, or (b) why in the world I didnt like the crappy large soap bubble excuse for microfoam.Well for $8 I found a Krups metal steam tip off the net (go to culinaryparts.com for a $1.99 steam tip plus $6 shipping) and screwed it on to the end of the metal wand after having discarded the useless steaming aid sleeve and old plastic tip, and VOILA!-- awesome foam made in half the time I could do the same thing with my old Starbucks Barista. These machines all have a Thermoblock for steaming unlike the traditional boiler on a better semi-auto.Nevertheless it is enough and the foam is first rate as I said. The only other thing to be aware of is that these machines cant use my beloved Peats coffee beans - too oily and they get stuck in the hopper- so I am still searching for a good dark roast which is not too oily. But for now after a month of use, I am happy with the espresso and the foam and delighted to make my morning cap with a minimum of effort. The F7 in particular is a great machine as against the other Juras. It is more programmible than the E* and much simpler to use (and smaller footprint) than the pricier units.I almost bought the F9 but there is just too much to think about on that machine and the bright chrome is a bit too shiny and pretentious. The F7 is the perfect mix of functionality and understated good looks. It is also the newest technology from Jura so it has some small touches that the F9 doesnt have, such as a 120 second steam timer versus the 60 second timer on the F9.

Update to the above review:

After many more months of use I am loving the Jura F7, and I found the beans to use: Blue Bottle Coffee Hayes Valley Espresso. Not too oily but very flavorful. Perfect for this machine. Better than Peats, and definitely fresher. I am not going to list their website here cause I dont want to look like a shill for them. But you can find them, I am confident. They will mail out to you for no additional cost.

By the way, the review above that says the F7 is a shinier version of the E8 is incorrect. The basic mechanism may be the same, but the programming functions and other nice features are significantly different. If you're already spending this much coin, the F7 is a better deal than the E8. Just my humble opinion.

My wife and I purchased this for each other approximately 2 years ago for ~ $1200.We named it "ChrisAnnie" as it cost enough to be another child, and it combined as a Christmas and Anniversary gift.

From the start, the coffee was a little bit off, with temperatures not quite getting high enough resulting in slightly bitter coffee. They get to about 190 (should be closer to 200-205), but Jura tech said that was 'normal' for their machines. This was a little disappointing for coffee affectionados and home-roasters.

Despite meticulously reading and re-reading the manual and watching the video and paying attention to cleaning schedules, etc. this thing started breaking down and popping up with unsolvable error codes after about 6 months. We had to do several procedures (wasting expensive cleaning tablets and filters, at our expense) in following tech support's directions. Finally they agreed to replace it since the issues could not be solved.I don't know if we got the same unit back or a refurbished job, but it started having the problems again after about 6 months. This time it was out of warrantee.

You should know this:THEY CHARGE OVER $200 PLUS SHIPPING JUST TO TAKE IT BACK FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST after your warrantee expires! Then repairs (they ran >$100 for us) and our shipping to them increased the costs to over $400.We fell for this once. Then the machine died again. It sat on our counter for several months while we agonized over going through the same thing again.

Rather than acting like the Proverbial "dog that returns to his own vomit", we decided discretion is the better part of valor, and we boxed it, threw it up in the attic, and bought a $160 Cuisinart with a burr grinder.

My wife still misses the lattes every now and then but it is not worth the thousands of bucks to get them.It just seems it should work better and not be so expensive to maintain after you pay so much for the initial purchase.

Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine - New 2009 Model V3 Review

Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine - New 2009 Model V3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a beautiful machine! I started learning about brewing espresso at home with a Gaggia Coffee.I've since stepped up to the Silvia and I wish I had bought it right away. The espresso I produce with it is far superior, never sour or bitter if I use the right amount and tamp it properly, and I can make microfoam. I also appreciate its heaviness, good looks, quiet operation and metal steam wand.

Many say - and it bears repeating - that you will only get the results you are looking for at home if you invest in a burr grinder of at least Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia MDF quality, grind right before brewing and use beans roasted within weeks, not months! I have had disappointing results with other grinders and all preground espresso including expensive Illy, etc.

Shop around and be sure to get free shipping, because this thing weighs a ton. I have seen good package deals where you can get the Silvia and Rocky together; with no tax and free shipping plus some free goodies such as a stainless steel tamper, you will be in business and might have some cash left over for the beans. Of course the instruction booklet is nearly worthless, but you can find some great videos on YouTube to show you what to do with all that stuff once you get it home.

If you have better things to spend your money on, like mortgage and groceries, or if you aren't too picky, look elsewhere; maybe try a stovetop moka pot. If you think you will be making espresso for years to come get this machine, a good grinder and a water filter, and some freshly roasted beans from Intelligentsia; then you will want a collection of little cups for serving your creations, and your friends might begin to think you are an insufferable coffee snob... and at that point, you will be. Trust me, your buddies most likely do not want to hear about your machine's brass portafilter and temperature stability.

This is NOT a cheap hobby. Maybe you should consider supporting your local coffee shop instead! As for me, I'm in too deep. Let me know if someone starts a twelve step program for espresso addicts. Enjoy!

I recently upgraded to this model from a Krups steam espresso maker and it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.I can't believe I did upgrade sooner.

The espresso comes out perfect, just like those at places like Starbucks. My favorite part about this model is the minimum work required for cleaning. It has a bin that collects the used grounds so you don't have to empty and clean after every cup.

The steam for the milk frother comes out super fast and super hot.It takes less than 30 seconds for me to froth milk. And when you're done, just rinse the plastic nozzle and you're set for the next cup.

Now the only downside about this model: it doesn't store too much water. If you have 2 or more people using this thing every morning, there's a good chance someone will always have to refill the water in the tank after the machine pumps out a half cup of coffee and blinks its red light.Even then, for the price, it is well worth it and provides great value.

Update 4/7/2010 - Still turning out great coffee/espresso with ease after 3 years of service.Must've saved me $1000 from morning trips to Starbucks annually.

Product Description:
Equipped with 15 bars of pump pressure, this 1500-watt automatic espresso machine grinds, doses, tamps, brews, and dispenses quality coffee, preparing one to two cups at the same time. The machine's built-in ceramic grinder ensures the best results without altering the flavor of coffee; it quietly delivers a more consistent grind, allowing perfect dosing and blending, plus offers more control over the density and body of coffee. In addition, the espresso machine's pre-brewing cycle maximizes flavor extraction, while its Pannarello frothing device produces steam in three different directions for cappuccinos and lattes, dispenses hot water for making hot beverages and soups, and can be completely removed for cleaning. Other thoughtful details include a 1-1/2-liter removable water tank; an Aqua Prima water filter that removes impurities from the water and protects the machine from limescale damage; a drip tray that can be raised or lowered manually or electrically with a simple touch, which means it easily accommodates different cup sizes such as espresso cups or glasses; and a removable Saeco brew group for easy, chemical-free cleaning. Sleek and stylish, the espresso machine measures 15-1/6 by 11-3/7 by 14-1/2 inches.

Briel ED132AFB Sintra Espresso Machine with Drip Coffeemaker Review

Briel ED132AFB Sintra Espresso Machine with Drip Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I won't repeat what has come before but first I will inform how to avoid the challenges that other reviewers label flaws.
First:space under coffee holder is too small for a mug.True, but the plastic tray and stainless steel grill slide out easily leaving plenty of room for a mug. When I discovered it I thought it was an intentional design feature. Also, even with the top tray out there is still another below to capture spills.
Second:filling water reservoir.I prefer the squat frothing jugs by Krups which hold a lot of milk and water. They are perfect for filling the reservoir without moving the machine and with plenty of clearance between the machine and the cupboard above.Only two jugs will fill it up as they do hold a lot.
Other Comments:
It does use pods but of the filter type (Starbucks) not Nescafe. One feature not spoken of in detail is the cup size control. With other machines you have to turn them off when enough coffee has been made.If you are like me and multitasking, you may forget and make a watery cup at best or empty your machine on the counter at worst. The Briel has a dial to select the amount of coffee produced creating a very consistent cup.In addition, the steamer produces steam nearly immediately with just a tiny dribble so small you can ignore it.The steam volume is incredible. Sloppy steamed milk production will make a mess, as it should.
The real flaw:It should come with two coffee holders for production line results. When you are having a party and everyone wants espresso the machine is fast, with you as the limiting factor.Your own speed of emptying the coffee holder, rinsing it out, filling it, tamping (the machine has a great built in tamper which I have never seen on any other brand) and pushing the button is the problem.Lastly, the front panel may be plastic but it can take repeated scrubbings with mild abrasives without harm.Treat it nicely and it should look good forever.

The packaging from the manufacturer was inadequate to protect the product and it arrived broken. When returned, Amazon had no others in stock for replacement. So, we ordered a Virtuoso by Baratza -- it is FAR superior to the La Pavoni because it has all the same features but is sturdy yet sleek in design, quiet when operating, and has virtually NO coffee dust when grinding. We are thrilled the La Pavoni was broken and we were forced to look elsewhere.Save yourself problems and mess, get the Virtuoso.

DeLonghi EAM3500 Magnifica Digital Super Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine Review

DeLonghi EAM3500 Magnifica Digital Super Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like to enjoy a capuccino every morning, but I was a bit tired of the process of griding the beans, tamping, frothing, cleaning up, etc. Also in an effort to save time, I decided to research a super autmoatic machine.I wanted a quality machine that would froth milk for me, but I was not impressed with the Jura Capresso machines because they require extensive clean up and are, in my opinion, grossly overpriced.

My previous espresso machine was a Delonghi, and I was impressed by the quality of the machine and the espresso it produced. The EAM3500's automatic frothing mechanism was its main selling point.I was a bit hesitant about the price and longevity of the machine, but decided to go for it... I am happy that I did.

The espresso is wonderful, and the fothing mechanism is great.Clean-up is, no exaggeration, takes a few seconds before the milk jug may be returned to the fridge.Frothed milk could be a bit hotter, but it's definitely tolerable. The boiler is easy to clean (unlike Jura Capressos), and the bright LCD lets you know everything that the machine requires.I have already descaled once (before I switched to distilled water), and it was a snap.

Overall, I have owned the machine for 1.5 months, and it's the best.I never cease to be amazed every morning when I wake up -- the machine is already on and warmed up, and a delicious cappucino is a push of a button and thirty seconds away.

I highly recommend this machine. The only bad experience that I had was when I tried to obtain a second water hardness testing strip. This piece of paper that comes with the machine is easy to lose, and when I called for another, Delonghi wanted to charge me $15... for a piece of paper!I decided to use distilled water (better for the machine anyway) and set the water hardness to its lowest level.

---UPDATE: 12/05/07 ---

I have to say that I am still extremely pleased with this machine. The seals for the milk jug have done bad, but Delonghi customer service has been wonderful; they have furnished new seals and a new top.

At the same time, I bought a second machine shortly after the first, and the second machine has been a nightmare. It has been "fixed" twice, and it can still be spotty for a few days (no froth or a cold espresso).

This machine must be cleaned and used with care to assure longevity.

Gaggia 102533 Espresso-Dose Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Warm Silver Review

Gaggia 102533 Espresso-Dose Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Warm Silver

I purchased this from Amazon in January and found it makes great espresso for a relatively small and light weight machine. I also have a Sirena which is much sturdier and more expensive but I think that the Gaggia makes a better espresso. I initially gave this product a lower rating because the lights failed to operate after a few uses and I was frustrated because it wasn't clear how to trouble shoot the machine from the Gaggia website. Thanks to Google, I found the customer support number in the US. They called me back promptly and were very helpful. They were able to resolve the problem with me over the phone with a simple screwdriver in about 5 minutes. They actually knew a lot about the machine and I didn't need to send it back and wait 5 weeks!Despite the issue with the lights, I think the machine has been well worth it.

Jura-Capresso 13215 Impressa S9 Avantgarde Automatic Coffee Center Review

Jura-Capresso 13215 Impressa S9 Avantgarde Automatic Coffee Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a little information about me, I'm not a connoisseur of coffee. I like sweet coffee's (Carmel lattes) and never drink my coffee black. I like a nice sweet coffee in the morning as something smooth in the morning to get the day started, and occasionally at night when it's cold and if we are just relaxing I like to have a nice warm something or other. My wife will drink her coffee black and with almost no sweetener, she's a cappuccino person.

We've gone to Starbucks on and off for years and recently a little coffee house opened up down the street. We have been going there every morning for the last month. We always get small coffees and at $6 a visit it was a shocker when we realized we had spent about $120 in a month on coffee... that's when we started looking around.

Luckily a friend of mine had gotten the Jura-Capresso Z5 last year and couldn't stop talking about it, so I started my search there. After a lot of research on the web, and seeing the $1k difference between this machine and the Z5 which essentially only adds the One-touch cappuccino we decided to go with this machine.

So far we've had the machine a few days and within the first few hours I was making sweet/frothy/creamy drinks that were on par with any coffee shop I had ever been to. It's really easy.

The pre-sets are pretty good if you aren't too picky, but I'm *really* picky about my coffee even though I'm not a fancy burista or anything. The S9 comes with the frothXpress attachment so if you are into just hitting buttons and drinking coffee with no effort, you can totally do that. But I use the default manual frothing attachment and like to froth my coffee a certain way and my wife likes it another way.

We also use the hot water spout to make tea at night sometimes.

I'll admit that looking at this for $2500 then looking at some of the other machines that *seem* to have the same attachments for $400 is hard to swallow. The real magic of this machine is a combination of all the automation (push a button, drink coffee) as well as the fine-tuned control over everything and lastly over how exactly the items are heated, pressed and filtered. If you are curious, search for the S9 review on CoffeeGeek, the guy knows more about coffee than an entire country. He reviewed this machine after having it for over a year and loaning it out to people and restaurants. He got into the detail of how much pressure is used to brew the coffee (apparently very important) and also how hot and how fast the milk is heated (which is important I guess as well so you don't kill the naturally sweet proteins in the milk)... it's a ton of detail but at the end of the entire thing he gave the S9 his rank of favorite super automatic and I agree.

If you go to Starbucks or a local coffee shop that is run by relatively normal/educated people and you are someone that doesn't mind spending some time or take pride in making a good drink, I don't think you would have any problem recreating that quality of drink with this machine, it's fantastically easy.

If you are lazy and just want drinks handed to you so you can drink them and have a fairly wide range of acceptable tastes for your coffee, you can probably just spend the $2500 at Starbucks and let someone else do it.

Overall the machine is fantastic. The finish is plated plastic which I thought was cheap feeling, but it looks fine because it's sort of brushed and not super shiney. That only bothered me for about 5mins, then I just forgot about it and drank the coffee.

Another thing I like is that the machine is really intelligent about keeping itself clean. It tells you when it needs to rinse and does it once or twice a day, keeping everything in tip top shape. It also monitors the levels of everything in the machine (grounds, beans, water, filter, etc.) and tells you exactly what to do on the screen. Also, I didn't mention this in much detail, but you can control and adjust the values of everything in the setup menu. How strong you want your coffee or espresso to be, how much water is in it, how much steam in the milk, the temperature, how finely ground the beans are, how hard your water is and just about everything else that can effect coffee.

The only cleanup after making coffee to speak of are the parts that touch the milk. For me that's just the wand that steams the milk. I just pop it off, rinse it and let it air dry for the next time. So that is something to consider if you think that you can just get this machine and push a button every morning and never need to think about it again. There are little things you need to do (like empty the grounds and the drip tray) every other day if you are making around 4-6 coffees a day. If it's just you or you are only making around 2 coffees a day, you can probably let it go 4-6 days between just rinsing it out, maybe 30 seconds worth of work.

So my take-away advice for anyone reading this is:
A) If you like coffee from anywhere (Starbucks, McDonalds, your house, etc.) this is totally overkill. Just stick to a normal brewing coffee maker and call it a day. This is like not being able to tell the difference between a Honda Civic and a Lexus GS400... if you can't tell the difference, then save all that money and get the Civic. Some people just can't tell.

B) If you like good coffee, and get frustrated when you get the same coffee every single morning from a store like Starbucks and some mornings it's good, and other mornings it's not and you are paying good money for it (like I was) and you feel cheated on the mornings it stinks, then you'll love this machine. It will give you the chance to perfect your cup of coffee and make it whenever you want with perfect accuracy. It's also handy to make simple things like hot chocolate and tea with, so it has more functions than just the espresso or cappuccino.

Grindmaster OPOD PrecisionBrewTM Single Cup Coffee / Tea Brewing System - with 10 FREE Pods Review

Grindmaster OPOD PrecisionBrewTM Single Cup Coffee / Tea Brewing System - with 10 FREE Pods
Average Reviews:

I bought this to replace my Bunn pod brewer.I liked the Bunn, but after going through three in two years, I figured it was time to try another brand. The Grindmaster is somewhat of a commercial-grade product and hopefully it will last longer.

Grindmaster pros include:

- Quickly brews good-tasting and very hot coffee (adjustable)
- Works with every brand of pods we've tried
- Has a large water tank, and can be plumbed for automatic fillup
- Reasonably good looking, although a bit larger than others
- Lets you program the unit to exactly fill your favorite cup

On the negative side, about the only thing I've noticed is that the unit is a bit loud when running, and there's no way to turn off the (relatively bright) blue water level indicator lamp on the front of the unit.

I'd rate the overall quality as somewhat above the Bunn and other brands, but it's not necessarily in a completely different league.

Truth be told I noticed most reviews about this machine are because they receive broken machines which are not fair at all. This machine is a very good starter machine and the guts of the machine are the exact same as the highly regarded Gaggia Classic. The only difference is the outer shell is a hard plastic where the Classic is all stainless steel. Not much difference in terms of shot quality between the two. if you want to save the money , I highly recommend this machine. It produces just as good of a shot if not better than my friends Breville machines that gets great reviews here on Amazon (not sure of the model number off the top of my head at the moment. I gave it 5 stars to give it a higher overall rating, but I'd truthfully give it 4 stars as I have tasted shots from machines that cost over 1k and produce amazing quality.
