Breville BES860XL Barista Express Stainless Espresso, Coffee Machine Review

I spent my Christmas 2009 reviewing expresso machines. I had just returned from a trip to Europe and finally was going to fold and get an expresso machine.I missed the expresso from Italy and France.1oz of crema delight.

So, I liked the Breville from all the reviews but was worried about some of the negativity on the "wet puck" I had read. All the reviews mentioned excellent coffee though, so it was on my short list.

Then I saw the Breville BES860XL, also known as the Barista Express Programmable Expresso. From the looks you can tell this unit has exchanged the hot water dispenser for a bean grinder. This unit is a fully automatic expresso machine with the super automatic feature of grinding a pre-measure of beans for your brew.Note, it is not a super automatic machine as you still need to manually mount the portafilter into the group head, and clean the filter afterwards. This is as automatic as you will want to go if you want to really control your coffee.

But, let me walk you through the pleasure:
1. the box.this has excellent graphics -- even as you open, the getting started guide and pictures guide you along. The unit removes easily.
2. The tamper is magnetically held in place on the front of the machine -- you can use it in place or remove for manual tamping.
3. New: -there is a dry puck feature now for all the fussy reviews -- this removes excess water so you get, a dry puck
- an excellent burr grinder -- you can dismantle this for cleaning, and it has a wide range of control
- for those that previously complained about the "cheat" dual wall filters -- the unit comes with single and double dual wall AND single wall filters
- there is a hideaway storage tray to hold all the small goodies
4. Steaming -- excellent steam temperature and pressure -- works very well with the provided frothing jug, very minimal excess water to start
5. The real test.I am using the dual wall filters, and the Illy whole expresso beans I got from Italy were made into pure heavenly expresso. Nice crema. This is the real thing.

This is one finely engineered machine. From a mechanically inclined electrical engineer to the folks at Breville: you have created an exceptionally functional piece that does the job.Did I mention it is beautiful on the counter as well?I have it on an island, no bad sides.

Drawbacks: none.BUT, when making a real expresso shot, make sure you pre-warm your demitasse.Otherwise the expresso will heat up your cup and your coffee will not be hot.I run a water cycle first into my cup to heat up the group head and the cup.

In my opinion this is the best buy in the market under $1500.At the office, daily I use a super automatic machine that is at that top end.

I've had two of these units now.The first one stopped heating water after 3 months.I don't mean it didn't get hot enough...I mean it didn't even get above room temperature.Breville USA support promptly sent me a prepaid mailer to send the unit back to them and equally as promptly sent me a new one.Now after having that one for three months it will not power on...at all.Again, Breville USA has offered to send me a new one, which I'm waiting on.This will be three of the same unit.

Sigh...Don't waste your hard earned money on this, you WILL be disappointed.

I would rate it ZERO stars, but the site won't let me.

Product Description:
Make any rainy day better by brewing crema-rich espresso drinks from the comfort of home with this simple-to-use espresso machine. The unit's Easy Eject filter system makes switching between the three included filters effortless--choose from single (7 grams), double (14 grams), and pod. Each solid stainless-steel filter offers dual-wall crema technology to ensure a rich, smooth flavor. The machine also comes with a 15-bar Triple-Prime pump that delivers three bursts of hot water into the filter head prior to extraction. This increased pressure expands the beans and helps eliminate air pockets, which allows the appliance to extract more crema for a rich, smooth-tasting coffee. When it's time to produce steam for frothing milk, the espresso machine provides a thermocoil heating element that increases the water temperature, a 45-degree pivoting steam wand with a stainless-steel frothing attachment, and a froth enhancer and stainless-steel jug for barista-style results. After frothing, its Auto-Purge function returns the water temperature to the optimal level for brewing. Other thoughtful details include a 91-ounce removable water tank, 4-1/2-inch head elevation to accommodate full-size mugs, and a warming tray on top of the machine that can warm up to six espresso cups. A combination tamping tool and measuring spoon comes included. I received my coffee maker and loved it for almost a year, until it stopped dripping the coffee.I had followed all the directions for cleaning and servicing the machine.I called the Arabee company from whom I purchased it.

They promptly made arrangement for me to get it back to them, as it was still under warranty. They have now had it for over 4 months and I can't get a proper response from them.I have been told that it took 6 weeks in the queue to get to service, then they needed a part, which may or may not have had to come from Italy. Now they won't even return calls or answer when I call. The next step, I guess is a legal one to get a new coffee maker or some form of recovery.

Loved the coffee maker while I had it.

I purchased this recently after I returned my unreliable Saeco V'spresso model. This machine has been much more reliable and makes excellent quality espresso/cappuccino with the push of a button. My favorite feature is the frothing system that allows it possible to make a cappuccino without moving the cup. It is much quicker than the traditional steam wand for lazy people like myself. Jura-Capresso seems to have much better customer service and warranties than its competitors as an added bonus.

Product Description:
With an exceptionally compact design and user-friendly front-panel controls, this automatic coffee-and-espresso center creates cafe-quality coffee drinks without ever having to move the cup. Simply push a preprogrammed beverage button for one or two coffees, one or two espressos, cappuccino, milk, or hot water. The countertop appliance comes equipped with an insulated 14-ounce thermal stainless-steel milk container, which stays right next to the machine and keeps cold milk cold for up to eight hours. The machine will steam and froth the milk; grind, tamp, and high-pressure brew coffee or espresso; then dispense automatically into the cup. Its commercial-grade conical burr grinder offers six fineness settings for any type of bean--from light to dark roasts, while a separate funnel for pre-ground coffee allows for making no-hassle decaf or flavored coffee drinks. The unit features an 18-bar power pump with a 1450-watt stainless-steel-lined ThermoBlock heating system, and its two-step pre-infusion cycle moistens and conditions ground coffee for maximum flavor extraction with perfect crema topping.
For added convenience, the appliance offers easy-to-use programming functions. Choose from two temperature settings, three strength levels, and volume--one or two cups at a time, from 1 to a full 16 ounces. Turn the rotary dial to make changes during brewing without changing the programmed setting. Plus, the steam output can be set to a certain time for filling cup after cup with the exact same amount of hot steamed or frothed milk, which means no more wasted milk. Even more, selecting from "continuous-on" or "auto-off" from one half-hour to nine hours in one-hour increments makes it possible for the unit to turn on at the programmed time and ensures it stays on for as long as it's needed. A bright 10-digit LED display dialog system gives short, simple instructions like "ready", "heating", "fill water", and "clean unit".
Other useful details include a 64-ounce removable water tank, an 8-ounce bean container, a five-level water-hardness selector, an automatic hot-water rinse cycle that cleans and pre-heats all vital brewing parts, a height-adjustable coffee spout, and an electronic water-level sensor that makes sure the machine never operates without water. Moreover, its Clearyl water-care system removes chlorine, lead, aluminum, and copper for better-tasting coffee, and a special organic additive removes almost all calcium and eliminates decalcifying altogether. The unit also provides electronic sensors that indicate when water or coffee beans need to be added, an automatic cleaning cycle indicator, a "full" indicator for the used coffee container, seven language options in the dialog system, Energy Saving mode to reduce power consumption in stand-by mode, and a separate main power switch. Accessories include a Clearyl water filter, cleaning tablets, a measuring scoop, a water-hardness indicator strip, and a DVD with detailed tips on brewing, frothing methods, and cleaning. UL listed for household use, the coffee-and-espresso center measures 16 by 11 by 13-1/2 inches and carries a limited warranty for two years or 6,000 cups, whichever comes first.

Keurig Single Serving Coffee and Tea Maker Bundle- B77 Review

Keurig Single Serving Coffee and Tea Maker Bundle- B77
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I give this 3 stars just because it is a Keurig and the single serve system is great.
I do however have a beef with this model. Not only is it more expensive than your BJ's or Costco it also lacks certain features you get when you purchase the B70 model. I just bought mine at BJ's and I am returning it to purchase a B70 model.
The differences are:
B70 ( Platinum )
Cup sizes up to 12oz
Adjustable Temp
Lacks the 72 K-Cups instead you get 12.
B77 ( Select )
Stops at 10oz
No Adjustable Temp.
Bonus 72 K-Cups instead of the 12.

If you don't care much for the differences then the extra K-cups might make it worth the buy. I would still suggest you get it from BJ's or Costco since this price is $30 more here than they have it for.
I wanted the 12oz so I decided to forgo the extra k-cups and I am going for the B70 (Platinum).

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine Review

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Breville 800 ESXL is turning out to be one of the best buys I have ever madeBreville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine.

I had a Gaggia that produced great espresso when I first got it, but recently, it stopped creating any crema whatsoever. Water leaked from the steamer wand and the expresso head. It was time for a replacement.

I studied and studied and studied all the expresso makers and I knew I did not want to spend over $500 for a good pot. My goal was to find a great pot for under that amount. I read every review there is on the internet concerning the Breville 800 ESXL. People love it or hate it but if you read carefully, you may find as I did, that many ofthose who hate it, did not follow the directions as prescribed by Breville. They treated it like their old pot, however, the Breville 800 is a wonderful pot if used according to the instructions put out by Breville. And dare I say, that some of the others who did not like the pot sounded like coffee snobs who want perfection and had no right buying this machine and judging by standards that only a much more expensive machine could match.

If you want a truly outstanding expresso or cappuccino, the Breville 800 willdo it for you, as long as you live up to your part of the bargain. The first thing you need are really good beans and fresh filtered water. Nextis to really learn how to make expresso. You need to find the right grind and then stick with it. I have a Capresso Burr Grinder that works great for only $85. You need to learn the right amount of pressure to tamp the coffee (also, it does not hurt purchase a good metal tamp- the one they give you is only okay). You should get a thermometer to make sure your frothed milk is between 140 - 160 degreesand then learn how to froth milk. The cups should be warm and you will have some greatcoffee.

you may not get great coffee the first time out--- and maybe not the second, but the more you do it, critique what you did, and make adjustments, you will find that the difference between and excellent cup and a good cup has more to do with you than the machine. This is a hands-on machine (which I love about it). Like a cook using fresh ingredients, the results often lie in the art of the cook. It is the same with this machine. If you just want to turn it on and get a great cup of espresso, it may happen sometimes, but not always. It is up to you to make your shot the best. There is a learning curve to be sure, but the end result is fantastic - and for a great price. I was making great shot after great shot in about three days.

I was scared to death about my filters clogging as others have said, but I have found that the best thing you can do is to clean after everyshot. it is nota big job to wipe down the nozzle, rinse out the pots and filters, and take the little tool they give you to keep the filters open and pokethe hole once to keep it open for the next time. Takes all of a minute- maybe less. The result, great expresso, perfect crema, great frothed milk (once you acquire the knack of rothing), and a beautiful, sturdy machine that should last a long time with the kind of care I ask you to give it.

Some have complained about the temperature of the coffee. I too thought it was not hot enough the first few times I made the espresso, and then I read the manual. When you do what the manual says, the coffee is plenty hot --too hot actually. As for the time it takes to steam the milk, no longer than my Gaggia with a lot less mess. And about the "sloppy mess in the portafilter" and no dry puck ---- well, I would like a dry puck too, but the paper from Breville in the box tells you that the technology they use to get the coffee hotand with perfect crema will not give you the traditional dry puck. Expect it to be watery in the portafilter. just rinse it out when done and you are in business.I accept that and as a result I get great coffee. My machine is not a Rencilio, nor a Gaggia. It is a Breville and it does not have the dry puck--- but it does have great espresso that can be made withina minute or two of turning on the machine. And clean up takes less time than it did to heat up (under a minute).

It has a large well for water which is easy to fill, from the front and the back. it is very very easy to clean. It is sturdy and it looks great. There are so many cool things built in --- obviously thought went into the design. Some complain about it being loud. I have never met an espresso maker that is not loud. Oh yes, I saw one once but that machine cost $2,000 and was fully automatic. There was no joy in making an expresso with that---- no art to it. The machine does it all.

Now, for the weaknesses. I already told you to get another tamp. The one they give is not the greatest. Also, it has the very cool feature where it purges itself after each shot or steaming allowing the built up steam toflow to the overflow reservoir. (Actually this is a positive feature) but on the negative side it uses more water, but no big deal unless you are paying for bottled water. With my Gaggia, I was always afraid it was going to blow up on me. This steam pressure release is very cool and well thought out.

Needless to say, I am very happy with this machine. As you may be able to see, I am the kind of person who looks at what I have done and tries to make the next one better. For me, this machine does not disappoint.

Hopefully, this review has helped.

Product Description:
Housed in heavy-duty die-cast stainless steel, this attractive espresso machine features a 15-bar Italian-made pump and a ThermoBlock heating system that maintains water at an ideal 204 degrees F during extraction. Prior to extraction, the unique 15-bar Triple Prime pump automatically releases three bursts of hot water in the filter head, causing the ground coffee or espresso pod to expand. This increases pressure, allowing the machine to extract more crema, giving the coffee a rich, smooth texture and taste. The machine's fully die-cast selector dial enables simple switching between espresso, steam, and hot water. When turned to the left, users can alternate between hot water and steam using the illuminating solid-steel buttons. The right position gives manual control of the espresso-making process.
Mounted on a swivel ball for easy maneuverability, the unit's stainless-steel steam wand produces continuous dry steam for barista-style milk and froth. The wand also dispenses hot water on demand for tea and other hot beverages. Included are single (7 gram), double (14 gram), and pod filters. Each solid stainless-steel filter incorporates Breville's unique dual-wall crema technology, which produces a back pressure inside the head that, together with the Triple-Prime pump, extracts more flavor and texture from the coffee. With a full 4-1/2-inch clearance, the machine accommodates large cups and travel mugs, making it ideal not just for espresso, but also americano, cappuccino, and cafe latte. The 75-ounce removable illuminated water tank produces 50 single shots of espresso before refilling, and is conveniently accessible from both the front and the rear of the unit. Other useful details include a unique auto-purge function, a 72-square-inch solid-steel cup-warming tray, a large 1-liter drip tray with "full" indicator, cord storage, a patented power-assist cord, and a concealed accessory storage compartment. Accessories include a tamping tool/measuring spoon, a cleaning tool, and a stainless-steel frothing pitcher. The espresso machine measures 12 by 10 by 12-1/2 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

Gaggia 102532 Espresso-Pure Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black Review

Gaggia 102532 Espresso-Pure Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gaggia has a reputation for building relatively solid though finicky espresso makers. This machine is one of the new generation of Gaggias, which evidently are attempting to retreat from the reputation of solidity. This machine - the Espresso - has three iterations: the Pure (the simple black plastic cheap one), the Color (one color, red, costs more than the Pure evidently because of the color), and the Dose (which can be calibrated to deliver a fixed amount of liquid per button press, which costs even more. The units all have the same mechanicals - stainless steel boiler, roughly 3.5 ounces in size, a brass coated brewing group, and (note well) a non-pressurized 58mm "commercial" portafilter.

Right out of the box, the Espresso feels cheap and flimsy. No metal in sight, and the machine (in my case the Dose) looks like a big ugly hunk of plastic. The steam control knob feels like a child's toy and is so poorly mounted on its stem that it feels like you could twist it off. The water reservoir is a skimpy 42 ounces, and the alleged warming plate is ugly white plastic and produces markedly little warmth. This by far is the ugliest appliance in my kitchen and is also among the most expensive. Most importantly, the machine weighs only 10 pounds, which makes tightening the portafilter a chore as you have to pin the machine down to keep it from tipping over or just being shoved around the counter.

The mechanicals inside appear to be solid, and the portafilter is sturdy and serviceable. The boiler appears willing enough, though it is really tiny, and the steaming wand is excellent. The dosing function on my Dose model appears mainly useless, as my brewing results worked better with manual operation, and this pointless features adds about $50 to the price of the base model. Eyeball your cup's fluid level and save $50. No three way valve, but the filter puck is reasonably dry and easily emptied.

Now the real problem - if you plan to use your own beans for this, you need a $300 grinder from Gaggia. That's it, end of story. My $90 Capresso Infinity after much experimentation with tamping and grind proved incapable of making anything other than sludge due to the non-pressurized portafilter. I called the vendor up and their service staff informed me (in a sympathetic and polite manner) that the Infinity simply couldn't produce a consistent fine grind. Even the popular Baratzas (in the $100-$200 range) can't produce a "Gaggia grind" without being disassembled and modified by the user. (This is true - check the Baratza website FAQs). Upshot: nothing less than a $300 grinder can produce home ground coffee for this machine.

The vendor told me to try pre-ground espresso, and sure enough the commercially ground coffee I tried was much much better, but this means dealing with a short lifespan and keeping the coffee in an airtight container in the freezer. Even after trying that, I found that the pre-ground produced nice crema only when very fresh, like 1-2 days, and generally not after it came out of the freezer. If you don't mind running off to a local store for a small dose of commercially ground coffee every day, this is your machine. Or you can buy a grinder that costs as much or more than your Gaggia machine does.

Anyway, the disappointment for me here was not necessarily that the machine has such extensive "special needs". If it was elegant and solidly made, I would still give it a pass, though maybe not for me personally as buying $600 worth of home espresso equipment is beyond my budget. However, even if we factor out the demanding grind requirement, the flimsiness of this machine and its ugly plastic frame simply is unacceptable at the $250-$300 price point. A Saeco Aroma in the same price range is made of metal, has a bigger steel boiler, weighs 30% more, and uses a pressurized portafilter that works nicely with less finely ground coffee.

The Gaggia has a better reputation for durability, but the new Gaggia Espressos look like they are made on the same assembly lines as Saeco's (the companies are commonly held) with the main difference being the portafilters, so I have little reason to assume that this cheap plastic eyesore will prove any more durable than a comparable Saeco. The Aroma is much easier to use, does not need a grinder that costs as much as it does, IMO is more attractive, and is at the same price point. I don't know why anyone would buy one of these Gaggias. Maybe if you have an expensive grinder, and your old espresso machine died, and you need a cheap replacement? Whatever. I am underwhelmed.

First... I'm not an employee of Espressione...

I've read many reviews on this item, most of them, not very positive.I thought I would add my 2 cents as I have had this machine for a little over 2 months.

Let's start with day 1.Dead on Arrival.Bummer.Well, it was easy enough to return to the place I purchased (Sams). They sent me a new one within 3 days, and I was excited to get started. Before you buy this machine, make sure you make this checklist:

1.I have a decent conical burr grinder ( )
2.I am aware that I need to buy fresh beans to get real crema ( )
3.I have a decent tamper in the 58mm variety ( )
4.I am not a total espresso geek, but I have owned a cheap machine or two ( )
5.I never pay retail for espresso machines ( )If you've checked most of these, feel free to continue, if you haven't, don't buy this machine. It's not for you.If you're an uber espresso geek, go buy your PID'd Rancilio Silvia or your Le Lit.You don't belong here. This machine has an aluminum boiler that has heat issues just like the rest of the lower grade machines do.It does hold heat better than most, but seriously, if you're in the $600 market, you shouldn't be looking at this machine. You can get this machine at "other" vendors in the $230 range. And for that price, there isn't a whole lot that's better.Maybe a Gaggia... but I'm sick of those pieces of plastic.

Physical Traits:It's pretty... Very pretty. It's also pretty solid and heavy at 24ish lbs.It is tall, and yes, you do have to hold on while attaching the portafilter. However, it's not as bad as previous reviewers have stated. The portafilter is almost as heavy as my Reneka Viva single group commercial machine at work.It has a very nice (and handy) temperature gauge on the top of the machine that is very useful.

Espresso:
Probably the best part of this said portafilter is that it has options for brewing espresso. If you have a decent grinder, you can remove the "crema enhancing" disks inside and use it's regular filter basket just like a higher end machine (a serious plus for me...).The pump has plenty of pressure to press fine ground espresso and make wonderful crema (as long as your beans are fresh). Some reviewers have stated the espresso is cold. Here's my typical process:

1.Fire up the machine into the standby position (heats boiler to just about 100 degrees C)
2.Once the temp is up, for the first shot of the day I do a quick blank shot to keep the portafilter warm.
3.I warm my cup up with warm water
4.Pull the shot.Enjoy.

I'm guessing people find the espresso cold is the massive portafilter is cold.Once it's warm, it stays warm. But honestly, I've had some pretty nice shots.

Steam:

Yup, it pretty much sucks in from the factory form. The machine makes plenty of steam for my latte's, but not without modification. The tip they give you for the wand is awwwwfuuuullll.Replace it with somethign... or trim it down.I used my Delonghi Ec155 tip on mine and it makes nice micro foam. But the original allows too much air into the mix.Foul bubbly milk...no thanks.

Yes, the wand is too close to the machine, but I have got used to it. It' not that big of an issue, and quite frankly I'm not that picky for $230 bucks shipped. If I were spending $700, I'd be furious.Well I think that just about wraps it up.I really appreciate good espresso.Sure, there are plenty of better machines out there, but this one suits me just fine.Hope you enjoyed this review and that it is somewhat sobering.

Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

Seeking the perfect 'superautomatic' espresso machine, we bought this model a little over 2 years ago.Worked fine for a while. Coffee quality good, nice frothing. Then, after about year, it began to leak water from beneath. When this got to the point of flooding the counter, we sought service.Nearest Saeco-registered service center (and the only one in Missouri) was 100 miles away.Dropped it off, left the required $75 deposit. It took the service shop a NINE MONTHSto receive parts. And, it turns out, not all the parts were sent. Service bill: $200 (1/3 the cost of the machine)ON WARRANY. After another 200 mile round trip, it was back in the kitchen. It lasted 2 weeks, and completely stopped functioning. Among other things, the frothing stopped workingThat's all for this SAECO."Superautomatic" sounds too good to be true, and it is.

Advice:
1) don't buy SAECO machines
2) don't buy any machine lacking reviews after at least a year of use. Read a lot of reviews and you'll see that this kind of breakdown is very common among all brands of superautomatics.
3) get up early enough to make a cup of coffee yourself.

We're back to our totally reliable, unbreakable, Mukka Express.

Product Description:
Equipped with 15 bars of pump pressure, this 1500-watt automatic espresso machine makes it effortless to enjoy cafe-quality beverages from the comfort of home. It features an innovative control dial and large buttons for easily customizing the aroma and amount of coffee in the cup and for choosing between one or two cups simultaneously; alert lights to the left of the dial provide clear, instant details for each function. The appliance also provides a patented removable brew group that allows the machine to tamp, brew, and dispense coffee in one cycle (remove the brew group for quick rinsing and chemical-free cleaning). In addition, its built-in ceramic grinder ensures the best results without altering the flavor of coffee. The grinder delivers a more even grind for perfect dosing and blending, which means more control over the density and body of coffee--plus substantially reduces the amount of coffee residue in the cup. Even more, the espresso machine's Rapid Steam technology reduces the normal waiting time between brewing coffee and steam output to just a few seconds. A separate heat exchange for steam delivers fast and continuous steam pressure for creating a creamy milk froth in no time. The included Pannarello frothing device dispenses steam in three different directions and makes it simple to froth milk for cappuccinos and lattes or to dispense hot water for Americanos, tea, and hot chocolate. Additional highlights include a stainless-steel boiler, a 180-gram-capacity bean container, an OptiDose adjustable doser (7 to 10-1/2 grams), a removable 1-1/2-liter water tank, a Brita water filter, a large cup-stacking surface that can hold up to six espresso cups at a time, and an adjustable-height drip tray that can be raised or lowered to accommodate a wide range of cup sizes. For added convenience, the unit's Energy Safe mode kicks in when the machine sits idle (choose Stand-By mode for enhanced energy savings). Durably housed in ABS plastic with an ultra-sleek and stylish design, the espresso machine measures 15 by 11-1/2 by 14-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

La Pavoni PA-1200 Napolitana Stainless Steel Automatic Espresso Machine

This is my third machine in 12 years. My first machine was a Krups Novo with a thermal heat block and a back pressure or modified filter holder. My second machine was a Starbucks Barista with a stainless steel boiler but also with a back pressure filter holders which produce a simulated espresso. The La Pavoni Napoletana is the real thing. You can't make or buy a better espresso.

This is an excellent espresso machine for the starter or the advanced barista.Heats up quickly and the heavy brass boiler, brass head and filter holder keep the machine ready for use.Consistently pulls espresso with a nice crema. The steam function provides plenty of steam to whip up thick frothed milk for cappuccinos. The grinder is easy to adjust maybe a little loud and holds enough beans for about 14 shots. The grinder isn't centered over the filter so you need to hold the filter tipped towards the back to keep the coffee in the holder. The machine is solid stainless steel, the drip trays are plastic but good enough. The reservoir holds 3 liters and is a little tight to remove and replace. The pump supplies plenty of pressure.I use the grinder setting between 5 - 4 depending on the bean.

Note:If you want a real espresso machine stay away from the machines with thermal heat blocks or steel boilers and any machine that uses a back pressure or modified filter holders isn't going to make a real espresso.

... when I looked at the price of these coffee machines, but I am so pleased that I made the leap. It's an expensive luxury, but we've come to feel it's a "must have" if really good coffee is of importance to you.We had had a Capresso coffee machine to make lattes and other treats, so I was familiar with the brand. That gave me the confidence to trust that Jura-Capresso made a machine that might be worth the investment. And boy, are we thrilled!!The coffee is dependably wonderful every time.We don't throw out the last half of a pot nor do we feel compelled to keep drinking just to finish that pot. Each cup is made hot and fresh every time. While it may be pricey, we recommend it.If you need just a little encouragement to switch to such a machine... Go for it!

I loved this machine from the first time I saw and tried it.However, I started having problems on day 2 - the milk wouldn't froth and it came out in spurts with a lot of water, not even filling 1/8 of the glass with milk.I took it back to Williams Sonoma and they cheerfully replaced it.It happened again to this new machine and, once again, I took it back for a replacement.(I had been in touch with Nespresso at all the junctures along the way and they replaced the milk jug and top twice.)When it happened on the third machine, I called the local Williams-Sonoma and asked if there was someone who could check out my machine.I am in the Danbury, CT area and Bill, at the local Williams-Sonoma, told me to leave it with him while I shopped and he would check it out. When I returned he told me it was frothing perfectly and then showed me how he set it up.It seems that I had not been pushing the jug connection tight enough. It has to click in.The lights had always been on and so I believed that the jug was connected correctly, but I was wrong. Not until I saw it being done and felt the connection, did I understand what I was doing wrong.Without being tightly connected it doesn't work correctly. Now I push until I hear a click and/or push it in a second time holding the back of the machine as I push, and have been making perfect lattes.I recommend this machine highly but think the documentation should be rewritten with this little bit of information in bold letters. I have seen many reviews of this machine from people who have had the same problem and hope that they found the solution as this machine is wonderful.

I received the machine really fast, was very excited and had it up and running in no time.I like the look of the machine, it is impressive and fits nicely in my kitchen. The only problem I have is inconsistent results and I have tried many things.I wish the instructions were a little more detailed as to how fine to grind the beans, how far to fill up the filter, how much to tamp... these things are not second nature to people who were not raised with an espresso machine.I will be contacting the company to see if I can resolve some of the results and hopefully that will take care of my issues.

La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black Base Review

La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black Base
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my fourth espresso machine. I bought it after the La Pavoni "Carina" (that I bought from Zabars) started to get unreliable, and I decided I'd rather replace it than to put more money into the Carina ... and still face a week or two of drip coffee.

While it is amusing how very little different the Professional and the 'Toy' models look, there is a big difference in performance. The Carina takes a very long time to heat up; this Carina Grande (which is what La Pavoni calls this black-base Professional model) takes five minutes. The Carina generates more steam pressure than a cheap automatic espresso machine, but the Carina Grande generates more steam pressure than the Carina. The result is that I get a better cup of espresso, with less need to plan ahead.

The machine is a little quirky. When you turn it on, it vents a bit of steam from the over-pressure valve before it makes a thtip sound and the pressure starts mounting. It's not very consistent about how long it will vent. If the water level is much below half-full, it may keep venting and not start building pressure.

I think the bottom line with La Pavoni is you get a really gorgeous Chrome Peacock that makes truly great espresso, but the workmanship is a bit uneven and you certainly shouldn't expect Japanese-car levels of reliability.

Espressione CA4865 Supremma Super-Automatic Coffee/Beverage Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After almost a month and a second try, I give up.
There are some pros, though, and it would be unfair not to mention them ...
Nice design, very attractive.
The coffee is not bad at all.
And, the customer support very competent and knowledgeable.
But ...
The machine seems to have a mind of its own.
The first one didn't work at all. I called customer support, but more to accomplish a formality ... When you pay $1,000.00 for a product, the last thing you expect is to have to spend the first day trying to make it work.
But I decided to give it another try.
The second one started just fine. User friendly, great coffee, stylish (looks great on the counter)...
After a couple of weeks, the output became inconsistent (some shots not even enough to fill a tablespoon). Resetting the amount of water didn't help. Customer service suggested that I avoid using the fine grind settings ... in other words: avoid certain settings, you may mess-up the machine. Well, this is not what I was expecting from a $1,000.00 machine.
At the same time, the brewing group started spilling the ground coffee all over the brewing compartment, without apparent reason (and, therefore, no way to fix it). Cleaning became a hassle.
The bottom line is ... not worth $1,000.00. This is the reason for the single star.

Product Description:
Combining an ultra-sleek design with exceptionally practical, user-friendly functionality, this super-automatic coffee/beverage center makes it easy to enjoy soothing, cafe-style coffee drinks, whether it's with a friend who stops by for a visit or with co-workers to get through a long day of business meetings. The 1150-watt machine delivers 18 bars of pump pressure and features a pre-infusion Coffee Essence System (CES), which injects water evenly into the coffee tablet to fully extract and maximize the aroma and flavor of coffee for delicious espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and more. Choose from eight programmable options and control the temperature with a simple touch to its interactive LCD display.
The unit works with either ground coffee or whole coffee beans (8-4/5-ounce coffee-bean capacity), and its built-in coffee grinder offers adjustable coarseness settings and grinding plates made of ceramic so it won't burn the coffee even at high speeds, all of which helps to ensure the freshest results. The super-automatic coffee maker's professional brewing unit replaces all the manual functions of a traditional espresso machine. Even more, it produces a 3 mm thick golden layer of cream on top--the sign of an excellent cup of espresso coffee. An audible beep not only indicates when the coffee is ready to enjoy, but it also alerts users to situations that require attention, like when the machine requires more water in the tank, when the coffee dregs container needs to be emptied, or when the side door needs to be closed if accidentally left open.
Other highlights include a large 1-4/5-liter removable water tank with a visible water level and a blue cobalt light, a cup holder and warming tray, hot water and steam functions, and a Maxi Cappuccino milk-frothing device, as well as an anti-drip valve with a self primer, a high-pressure safety valve with cap, adjustable automatic shut-off, a removable drip tray, and self-cleaning and decalcification functions. DeLonghi ESAM6600 Gran Dama Digital Super-Automatic Espresso Machine Review

DeLonghi ESAM6600 Gran Dama Digital Super-Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, this machine is physically superior to all other super-automatic brands I checked out.The top line Jura, Saeco, and Krups are all wrapped in plastic with steel accents in front while the Delonghi is fully encased in steel. The engineering is very solid and it has a gorgeous presence in the kitchen.

If you like Cappuccino, you will love this machine and its truly one touch operation. However, you must use proper sized Cappuccino cups to get the full experience. The machine is tuned to froth the milk and add the espresso shot so that froth extends about 1/4 inch above the edge of the cup. You can change these settings, but out-of-the-box it is perfect.I have never had a better Cappuccino anywhere - even Italy.(I use Illy medium roast beans). The milk container is incredibly convenient.I have placed the machine near my fridge so I simply store the milk container in the fridge after each use.It snaps in and out of place very easily.

The espresso shots are wonderful. It is important that you take note of the grind setting when you open the box before you change it.They set the grind setting at the factory for each machine and it is unlikely that you will find a better mark.People say that super-automatics can't make a shot as good as the manual machines but think this machine defies that rule.

To really enjoy and understand this machine, you need to read the manual and take some simple extra steps before and after you use it each day.First of all, use the rinse feature often. It takes 1/2 second to push the button. If the machine has been sitting for a while, hit rinse before you use it so the infuser will heat up.After your last cup for the morning etc, hit rinse. It is a quick and simple way to keep the machine working well.Second, before and after you use the milk container, hold the CLEAN button for 5 seconds. It blasts steam through the internal parts that transport the milk. There is no other way to clean the milk that enters the machine. If you don't do this, the milk will harden in the machine and cause problems. You do not need to CLEAN after every cup, just when you are finished for that period of the day.Again, it is quick and simple and makes a big difference. Finally, prep your machine based on your usage.Don't let the machine tell you to empty the container, fill the beans, or fill the water.Get ahead of it so that your coffee making sessions are not interrupted by these messages.Once every day or so, depending on usage, just check everything before you start so you don't waste time or coffee.

Here is an important point. If you are drinking alone, this super- automatic is as much work or more than a manual machine. You need to prep and clean it more than a manual machine. The super-automatic only pays off in terms of convenience when you make the second cup and beyond. With this machine, you can just hit CAPPUCCINO 10 times in a row and you will have 10 cups - it's that simple. But after 14 cups you refil the water, empty the grounds container, top off the beans, clean the milk and rinse the infuser. To me, its all worth it because it makes a great cup of coffee and it is just so damn cool.

In summary, I am so pleased with this product that I was motivated to write this review. What else can I say?
